How to Use It

Type or paste your text into the box. You'll see total characters, characters excluding spaces, and word count update instantly. Below that, the limit checker shows your current count against X/Twitter (280), SMS (160), meta description (160), meta title (60), and Instagram captions (2200) — anything over the limit turns red immediately.

Why Character Limits Actually Matter

Going over a platform's limit doesn't just look bad — it can break things outright. Google truncates meta descriptions past ~160 characters with an ellipsis, cutting off your call to action right when it matters. SMS messages over 160 characters split into multiple texts, which can cost more or arrive out of order. Twitter/X simply won't let you post past 280.

Characters vs. Words vs. Bytes

Character limits count every character — including spaces, punctuation, and emoji (some emoji count as more than one character on certain platforms due to how they're encoded, though this tool counts them as displayed characters, matching how most platforms show the count to you).
