How to Generate a Sitemap

Paste your page URLs into the box, one per line. If you'd rather type short paths such as /about and /contact, enter your website address in the field above first and the tool completes them for you. The XML appears straight away as you type, along with the number of URLs included, the number skipped, and the file size. Click Copy XML or Download sitemap.xml, upload the file to the root of your website, add the Sitemap line the tool displays to your robots.txt file, and submit the sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Options and Limits

You can add a change frequency, a priority, and a last-modified date to every URL, and give the home page priority 1.0. Only the URL itself is required. Google ignores priority and change frequency, and it only uses last-modified dates when they're accurate, so it's best to leave the date out unless you know the real one for each page.

The tool tidies your list as it goes: it removes duplicates and #fragments, and skips anything that isn't a web page, such as mailto: links. A sitemap can only list pages from a single site, so any URL on a different host or protocol is skipped, and the skipped entries are listed with the reason. A single sitemap can hold up to 50,000 URLs. Note that this tool builds the file from the URLs you give it — it doesn't crawl your website to find pages.
