How to Take the Typing Test

A short passage is shown at the top. Click the text box and start typing it — the timer begins on your first keystroke. Each character you type is highlighted in the passage: green when it's right and red when it's wrong, with the next character to type marked so you can keep your place. Your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy as a percentage, and the elapsed time update as you type. The test finishes when you've typed as many characters as the passage contains. Click New passage / Restart to try again with a different one of the built-in passages.

Understanding Your Score

WPM is the number of words you've typed divided by the minutes taken, and accuracy is the share of typed characters that match the passage. Because accuracy reflects what is in the box at the moment, a mistake you go back and fix isn't counted against you. Averages vary, but around 40 WPM is often cited as typical, and 65 to 75 WPM or more is common for professional typists. Since these passages are quite short, your number can jump around between attempts, so take a few tests and look at the average.

To improve, focus on accuracy first — speed follows once your fingers know where the keys are — keep your eyes on the screen rather than the keyboard, use all your fingers, and practise a little every day rather than in long sessions.
